About us
Waitī Waters is being established to provide stronger and more reliable water infrastructure services throughout South Wairarapa, Tararua, Carterton and Masterton.
As a council-controlled organisation, Waitī Waters brings together South Wairarapa, Tararua, Carterton and Masterton Councils, in partnership with Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu, to provide safe and reliable water services for current and future generations. Representatives from these partners make up our Stakeholder Forum who provide oversight of our company.
Rising water services costs, aging infrastructure and historical underinvestment in asset renewals and maintenance have created a situation that requires attention. Solving these problems requires collaboration and a larger investment than one Council could handle on its own.
The Government set clear expectations and deadlines for its Local Water Done Well reform, asking Councils around the country to consult with their residents on a plan for the future delivery of water services. Across New Zealand, many other Councils are taking the same approach we are and collaborating with their neighbours to create new council-owned water organisations.
While it’s a big change there are real benefits for the region, including:
More affordable and resilient water services
Greater operational efficiency, with one organisation planning, contracting and delivering infrastructure works across the region
New regional employment opportunities through a larger, locally based infrastructure provider and;
Better access to finance, supporting necessary investment programmes.
Waitī Waters will be operational by 1 July 2027, and we look forward to serving the South Wairarapa, Tararua, Carterton and Masterton districts and their communities. Until then, your water services will continue to be delivered by your local Council.
